Improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services across Makueni County through community-led interventions and results-based financing.
World Bank-supported, results-based financing for improved WASH services in Makueni County
The Kenya Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (KWASH) Programme is a World Bank-supported initiative that uses results-based financing through Disbursement Linked Indicators (DLIs) to improve access to water supply, sanitation, and hygiene services. Makueni County is one of the participating counties implementing the programme.
Community Health Promoters (CHPs) play a central role in data collection, verification, and community mobilisation. They capture household and facility-level data through this portal, enabling real-time monitoring of KWASH indicators across all wards.
The key indicators tracked and verified under the KWASH Programme
Assessment of household sanitation facilities against non-negotiable indicators: intact slab, fitted lid, no leakage, and handwashing facility. Tracks new and upgraded facilities.
Open Defecation Free village verification covering exposed excreta, toilet access, squat hole coverage, floor cleanliness, privacy, and handwashing facilities.
WASH assessment of health facilities including gender separation, PWD accessibility, structural durability, septic functionality, and piped water availability.
Comprehensive school WASH assessment covering gender-segregated facilities, MHM support, special needs accessibility, handwashing stations, and construction supervision.
Coordinated WASH Services village tracking including ODF status, household sanitation, school and HCF WASH status, and multi-year planning periods from 2025 to 2031.
CHPs are the frontline data collectors assigned to specific wards. They capture household and community-level data, enabling real-time monitoring of KWASH indicators.
